Child Adult Relationship Observation – CARO (Online)
CARO is designed for professionals who need to make a structured and reliable observation of a baby and a carer. This might be during a regular healthy baby contact, a clinical assessment or part of child safeguarding and allows the professional to make a rapid and well-grounded assessment which can be part of an investigation and or intervention and trigger a deeper investigation if needed.
CARO provides practitioners with a framework for understanding carer/baby interactions and a vocabulary to share observations with professionals or provide strengths-based feedback to parents/carers.
Strengths-based video feedback is a unique component of a Mellow group. A parent and child caretaking activity is filmed before and after the group. The practitioner will then talk through the video with the parent in an individual session. Self-modelling through video feedback is an effective learning tool which is used in a number of disciplines e.g. in sport to improve performance. When a parent watches a video of how they interact with their own child it can help them see what works and what does not work so well, thus supporting change in the parent’s behaviour.
Video interaction can also be used to evidence a change in the parent/child relationship during the course of and after the Mellow Parenting group. The video provides parents with evidence of what they are getting right with their child, and the chance to reflect on what they want to change.
The three CARO domains are based on the original six dimensions of Mellow Parenting described in the original Academic Mellow Parenting Observation System (MPOS).
