Our original (offline/face to face) Going Mellow programme is for parents with babies under 18 months and toddlers 18 months plus. Going Mellow has been shown to help parents with their mental health and well-being, plus improvements in parent-child interactions and development.
Online Going Mellow was developed during COVID 19, when restrictions meant that parents and children could not join face-to-face groups.
We are pleased to offer this online training to facilitators who wish to train and deliver this online programme to parents with children aged 0 – 5 years.
Designed to be delivered online over 8 weeks, in separate gender groups, sessions include learning and activities for parents e.g. relaxation and mindfulness exercises, baby and toddler interaction focused activities, video feedback, plus ‘Have a Go! prompts for parents to try out at home. There is also an optional session for partners to attend.
Included in this programmes; Online CARO (Child Adult Relationship Observation). CARO is designed for professionals who need to make a structured and reliable observation of a baby and a career. This might be during a regular healthy baby contact, a clinical assessment or part of child safeguarding and allows the professional to make a rapid and well-grounded assessment which can be part of an investigation and or intervention and trigger a deeper investigation if needed.
CARO provides practitioners with a framework for understanding carer/baby interactions and a vocabulary to share observations with professionals or provide strengths-based feedback to parents/carers.
Strengths-based video feedback is a unique component of a Mellow group. A parent and child caretaking activity is filmed before and after the group. The practitioner will then talk through the video with the parent in an individual session. Self-modelling through video feedback is an effective learning tool that is used in a number of disciplines e.g. in sport to improve performance. When a parent watches a video of how they interact with their own child it can help them see what works and what does not work so well, thus supporting change in the parent’s behaviour.
Video interaction can also be used to evidence a change in the parent/child relationship during the course of and after a Mellow group. Video provides parents with evidence of what they are getting right with their child, and the chance to reflect on what they want to change.
The three CARO domains are based on the original six dimensions of Mellow described in the original Academic Mellow Parenting Observation System (MPOS).
