Mellow Parenting programme to be researched and implemented within Australia’s public health system

Mellow Parenting, the Glasgow-based charity that develops evidence-based parenting programmes, has taken another significant step in its international work as its Mellow Growing Together programme becomes the focus of a new research and feasibility study within Australia’s public health system.

Mellow Parenting CEO Raquib Ibrahim visited Australia this week to deliver training to a group of Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists from the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS), Community Health. The clinicians were trained to deliver Mellow Growing Together, an eight-week intervention programme designed to support parents of children aged 0–5 to strengthen their relationships with their children during the crucial early years of life.

The training marks the first stage of a research and feasibility study led by Jodi Renshaw-Todd through the Clinician Researcher Training Programme at the School of Psychological Science, The University of Western Australia. The study is funded by the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund. The clinicians, who already have extensive experience supporting families during the perinatal period, will now deliver the programme as part of the study to local mothers identified as vulnerable.

During his visit, Raquib Ibrahim also met with the senior leadership team at CAHS to discuss the long-term potential of the partnership and the opportunities that could emerge should the study demonstrate positive outcomes. Mellow Parenting, The University of Western Australia and CAHS share a commitment to supporting parents to build strong, nurturing relationships with their children from the earliest years of life.

Speaking after the visit, Raquib Ibrahim said:

“There was a genuine sense of curiosity, enthusiasm and commitment to finding new ways of supporting families through relational, evidence-informed practice.”

“The training itself was a real highlight. It was a pleasure to work with such a knowledgeable, thoughtful and passionate group of clinicians. They brought a wealth of experience, and their openness to learning, willingness to reflect, and commitment to building nurturing relationships embodied so much of what Mellow is about.”

“We look forward to supporting the team throughout the feasibility study and continuing to build this exciting partnership.”

The collaboration represents an important milestone for Mellow Parenting as its evidence-based programmes continue to gain international recognition and support families beyond Scotland. “We are delighted to be working together to help more babies, parents and families experience the benefits of safe, nurturing relationships during the earliest years of life.”
